Argentine President Cristina Fernandez is promising to help build a 14-mile (23-kilometer) tunnel through the Andes into Chile. Chilean President Michelle Bachelet also supports the project.

Argentina’s state news agency says the tunnel and railway will cost US$3 billion.

The new tunnel would be at an altitude of 8,200 feet (2,500 meters) — almost 2,600 feet (800 meters) lower than an existing highway pass often blocked by snow.

Brazil and Argentina are ready to stop using U.S. dollars to trade goods between them.  Brazil’s president told the Buenos Aires-based Clarín newspaper that exports and imports between the two nations will be bought and sold in local currency — reals and pesos.

Silva says the move will boost bilateral trade, which reached $17.6 billion this year through July.

President Cristina Fernandez has confirmed that Argentina’s economy has expanded 8.5 percent over the last 12 months.

An Economy Ministry source told Reuters this week the economy grew about 6 percent in June from a year earlier, which would be a slower pace of expansion compared to May, when it expanded 8 percent year-on-year.

Argentina is Latin America’s No.3 economy. It has expanded at an annual rate above 8 percent for the last five years, due to robust consumer spending and booming agricultural exports in a rebound from the 2001-02 economic crisis.

The country’s Cabinet chief said on Wednesday that Argentina will meet all its debt obligations in 2008 and 2009. Given that it has foreign currency reserves of about $47 billion, ”no well-intentioned person can doubt that Argentina is going to meet each and every one of its commitments”.

New Power Plant deal agreed for Albania

Austrian utility “Verbund” has won a concession to build a 166 million euro hydropower plant in northern Albania.

The decision was made to offer cheaper prices of power to the Albanian system and market. The Economy, Trade and Energy Ministry expect the hydropower plant to have an installed capacity of 40-70 megawatts, and to be built in 36 months.

Albanians have been plagued for decades by lengthy and frequent power cuts that are mostly blamed on drought, the dilapidation of the communist-era grid and a failure to build new hydro and thermal plants.
The new power plant will greatly improve the quality of living for many Albanians by minimizing the amount of power shortages and offering more affordable electricity.

Albania is building its first wind park and plans to export energy to Italy under a new initiative. Two companies – Italy’s Moncada Costruzioni and Enpower Albania – are behind the project, which could provide a capacity of 500MW.

Production is expected to begin by 2010. Energy will travel through a power cable stretching from the Albanian port of Vlora to Italy’s Brindisi, at a depth of 825m.

“In the near future, [the cable] could enhance the import of energy produced by conventional plants that [we] intend to develop on Albanian soil,” said a statement from Moncada Construzioni. In August, the Albanian government approved the use of forest and pastureland in the municipality of Vlora for development of the wind park.

Experts say the potential for similar projects exists at a number of locations in Albania — especially in the lowlands, along the coast and in the hills. The Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERE) has now licensed several companies to develop this potential.

The Guide focuses on Tirana, with coverage of Kruja and Berat.

Tim traveled to Albania in November 2007 and, with assistance from the USAID team, met with over 50 hotel managers, travel agencies, restaurant owners, museum curators, tourist guides and local artists.

He has crammed a lot of practical travel tips and information into this compact 142 page pocket-sized Tirana City Spot guide. There are concise sections on history, lifestyle, culture, shopping and even the annual Human Rights Film Festival held in Tirana in March.

The practical information sections provide travelers with the essential information they need to arrange accommodations, visit the “Bllok” area nightlife and attractions of Tirana, sip coffee and people watch, and sample the cuisine of Albania.

There is also a section on “Green Tirana,” which guides travelers to the natural side of Tirana and surroundings – such as Ibë Village near the Petrela Castle, Mount Dajti and its cable car to the summit, and the Grand Park of Tirana. RRP £6.99

Thomas Cook has been publishing travel guides, timetables and maps for over 130 years.

Fresh Property Co is very excited at the introduction of the new guide. Its almost certain to raise peoples awareness of the country, and as a result more people will seriously consider Albania as their holiday destination. Albania’s tourism industry is already booming; and with the recent introduction of direct flights from London Stanstead, Albania’s popularity is only going to increase.

23% Increase of Tourists to Albania in 2008

Best ever summer season in Albania!

It has been a wonderful summer season in Albania for 2008, and the coastal towns of Saranda, Vlora and Durres were the busiest they have ever been.

There are many opinions why the tourist numbers seem to have been higher this year.  Most believe it is due to the improving roads and infrastructure in Albania, that makes travelling a lot faster and easier.  There has also been increased marketing by the Albanian tourist authority to attract more holiday-makers.

Tourists from Kosovo, Italy, Greece and Macedonia seem to be the largest number of visitors.  In smaller numbers, tourists from Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Germany and Russia seem to be drawn to the Albanian coastline and beaches.

Balkantravellers.com recently reported that the number of tourists to Albania has increased by 400,000 people this year.

Official data, presented by the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Ylli Pango, showed that 2,089,538 tourists entered Albania from abroad during the first six months of 2008, which is a 23% increase compared to the same period last year.

Out of the total number of tourists, the Panorama newspaper reported, 984,038 of them were foreigners and 1,105,500 were residents of other countries of Albanian descent. The latter, according to the World Tourism Organisation, are also considered as tourists.

The reason for the growth in tourist interest, according to the publication, is the country’s intensified advertising campaign, which included the publication of a guide to Albania and video spots on CNN and local television stations in Macedonia and Kosovo.
As reported by BalkanTravellers.com also in August, many holidaymakers from Greece, Macedonia, Bulgaria and Serbia opted to spend their summer vacation in Albania, lured by the country’s prices, beautiful coast and favourable conditions.

The increasing tourist numbers is generating additional interest in sea view property as holiday-makers can see the property prices going up every year, and as hotel prices are increasing as well.

Now is the time for seaview property in Albania….
